How to wire a plug is a basic household task but is an important job in which safety is paramount. Here is a step-by-step guide:
- Unscrew the cover.
- Look at the inside of the plug. The fuse is on the right. The live wire is brown. Earth is green and yellow. Blue is neutral.
- Place the cord on the plug to see what length of chord is required.
- Score the outer insulation with a sharp knife, taking care not to nick the inner.
- Bend the outer insulation until you can pull it off, again causing no nicks.
- Cut the respective wires to size.
- Using pliers, remove the inner insulation to expose a little wire.
- Undo the terminals.
- Lift up the cord grip.
- Insert the wires, in the order: Neutral, Earth, Live.
-Tighten terminals.
- Tighten the cord grip.
- Before replacing the plug cover check the fuse rating is appropriate for the appliance.
- The last check is to make sure no wires are sticking up that could get trapped.
- The final screw to tighten is the middle screw.
